How to participate

Local Participation

The majority of events held at the Institute are open to anyone who would like to attend. The Institute is particularly eager that UK mathematicians and scientists should feel able to take part in the activities whether or not they are formal long-term participants in a programme. Additional information about participating in programmes, workshops and other events is available below; but if you have any further questions please contact us.

Please see the “Vistors” menu and Institute A-Z pages for additional information when planning your visit to the INI.

Programmes

Invitations for longer-term participation in Institute programmes are made on the recommendation of the academic organisers of each programme. The number of invitations that can be issued is limited both by financial and by space considerations, and in normal circumstances almost all resources are committed a considerable time before the start of the programme. Enquiries about invitations are best made to the organisers of the programmes in the first instance. Contact details for organisers may be found in the “Contacts” section of the pages for the programme in which you are interested.

All programmes have funds available to support visits of intermediate length (a few days to a couple of months) from both UK and overseas participants, and these are usually allocated after the main shape of the programme has been determined. Participants may be, at the discretion of the organisers, given a daily allowance towards subsistence (accommodation and food). The maximum level is agreed by the Inland Revenue and some participants will be asked to try and find partial support themselves. Participants should be aware that housing in Cambridge is very expensive. It is best to contact the organisers directly in the first instance, but you should also feel free to contact the Institute directly on info@newton.ac.uk if this is more convenient.

Workshops and Other Events

The Institute host a wide variety of shorter term (typically one week) workshops and other events. These include workshops associated with INI programmes and Newton Gateway activity, scoping meetings, satellite meetings, and follow-up meetings. If you wish to participate in one of these events you can apply via the application form on the appropriate event’s page. You can find a list of all upcoming events on the INI’s Event Calendar.

Short Visits

  • Any researcher attached to a UK University, academic institution or R&D group in industry or commerce may visit the Institute for up to 2 days without an invitation, in order to attend seminars or to work with colleagues. Visitors are asked to sign in at the Institute’s reception desk giving your name, academic affiliation and which programme you are interested in.
  • There is no need to notify the Institute in advance that you will be coming, but it does help if you send a brief email to reception@newton.ac.uk beforehand telling us when you intend to arrive.
  • Please note that we are unable to offer office space, accommodation or meals during such short visits, but visitors are welcome to use the common areas of the building.
  • If your visit unexpectedly extends beyond 2 days then we would ask you to arrange for a programme organiser to issue you with a formal invitation.
  • Please note that whilst we also welcome visitors to attend workshop events, these visits are limited to 2 days.  If you wish to attend a workshop for longer than 2 days, please register via the appropriate workshop registration page.

In addition to visiting the INI, there are multiple ways in which you can participate remotely:
