Portrait of Isaac Newton

The portrait of Newton is a copy of one painted in 1689 by Sir Godfrey Kneller, which is owned by the 10th Earl of Portsmouth. This copy was painted by Barrington Bramley and donated to the Institute in 1992 by the Director of the Institute, Sir Michael Atiyah, who unveiled it at the opening in July of that year. It shows Newton at the height of his scientific acumen, before he went to London to take charge of the Mint.
